The First Step To Get Your Small Business Online
Do You Think That Getting Your Domain Name Is Too Hard?
You Might Be Happy To Learn How Easy It Really Is…
If you let someone else register your Domain Name, you instantly give up control over the most important digital asset of your business.
Many new website owners have come unstuck by not setting up their Domain Name themselves. Instead, they let their web guy or gal, or a well meaning friend do it.
Doing it this way opens the door to being held to ransom over registration fees or having it being sold on to someone else.
If you own your Domain Name, you don’t have to worry about any of this.
IS OWNING YOUR DOMAIN NAME REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?
You may be wondering why it is so important to own your Domain Name.
Perhaps you think it’s a no brainer just to let your web guy or gal set it up for you.
It’s only one extra step for them after all.
They are the experts so what harm can be done?
What you need to understand is your Domain Name is the ONE piece of your online set up that you REALLY do need to own.
This means it must be registered in your name or the name of your company.
If someone else other than you registers it, then they have full control over it.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
It means they can sell it, shut it down or worse, they can redirect any web traffic you send to it to a completely different website. ( I kid you not)
Now, if you are already hooked up with a decent web guy or gal, then the chances are they will insist that you register the Domain Name yourself (with their help of course).
Or, they will register the Domain Name, BUT they will use your contact details to do so.
If you are working with a team that does this then you are in safe hands.
However, if there is any doubt about who is going to own your brand new Domain Name, I suggest you take a few minutes to read on and find out how easy it is for you to register your own Domain Name by yourself.
4 STEPS TO GET YOUR DOMAIN NAME
Getting a Domain Name is the first step to building website.
It only takes around 5 minutes (usually) and you DON’T need to be a technical expert to do it yourself.
I’ve mapped out 4 steps for you to follow.
Read on to find out how you can do it…
A NOTE BEFORE WE START…
You will notice that my walkthrough uses a company called Namecheap.
They are a Domain Name Registration Company that sells Domain Names to the likes of you and me.
I use this company pretty much exclusively to set up and manage my Domain Names.
They have an easy to use interface and I’ve only had good to great experiences with them during the last 8 years of using their services.
And I like them… a lot.
In the interests of transparency, you need to know they send me a small commission if you use any of the links (like this one) on my site to purchase your Domain Names.
When you use my links (again like this one), it means I can fund my corner of the web for a little while longer.
It also allows me to provide my significant other with the decent coffee (that’s a whole other story) that she demands prefers.
Once again, using my links to buy your Domain Name doesn’t cost you a cent or penny extra, but it does help me.
All in exchange for me (hopefully) helping you on your way to owning your own Domain Name.
Right, that’s enough of that.
I’m sure you’re itching to get your Domain Name set up.
STEP 1 – Check Availability
WHAT
Search for your Domain Name to see if it is available.
WHY
If someone else owns this Domain Name, then you’ll have to choose another one.
HOW
Go to Namecheap.com and enter your Domain Name in the search bar
STEP 2 – Grab Your Domain Name
WHAT
Choose the Domain Name you want (subject to availability).
WHY
Let the Domain Name Company, Namecheap, know which name you want to buy from them.
HOW
Enter your Domain Name and select the .com or whatever option you want.
STEP 3 – Customise Your Order
WHAT
Choose how long you want your Domain Name for and make your details private.
WHY
Domain Name ownership is bought in years and you have the (FREE) option to keep your personal details secret.
HOW
Use the screen options to select the number of years and the “Domain Name Privacy” option.
STEP 4 – Confirm And Pay For Your Order
WHAT
Pay for your Domain Name and make it YOURS!!!
WHY
To make sure no one else grabs it before you. You can also start setting up emails with your Domain Name as part of the address, rather than using Gmail or Hotmail. This will make you seem more credible.
HOW
Create an account with Namecheap – you’ll need this to safely enter your credit card details and to check on your Domain Name from time to time.
